The Skipper runs a boat charter service along with his first mate, Gilligan. One afternoon, they take five passengers on a tour: a wealthy socialite couple, a professor, a Kansas farm girl, and a Hollywood starlet. They get caught in a storm and the S.S. Minnow runs aground on a deserted island. The seven castaways must work together to survive while hoping for rescue.

Trivia
Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells were not given individual credits in the first season opening credits because Sherwood Schwarz didn’t expect them to become prominent characters. They were simply referred to as “the rest”. Bob Denver insisted they be given equal credits for the remaining seasons.
Though never mentioned on the show, Sherwood Schwarz had a first name ready for Gilligan if ever needed. Willie.
The lagoon featured on the show was the same one used for Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Eunice Wentworth “Lovey” Howell: Anyone who says money can’t buy happiness doesn’t know where to shop.
Professor Roy Hinkley: Listen, Gilligan, how far down was she? How many feet?
Gilligan: Professor, in navy circles, we don’t say “feet”. We say “fathoms”.
Professor Roy Hinkley: All right, how many fathoms?
Gilligan: Oh I don’t know, about 15 feet.
